Pierce Volleyball Team capped off its 2016 season on Sunday (December 4) with a trip to the State Finals after defeating two very good teams in Sierra College (Northern California) 3-0 and an epic semi final match against El Camino College (Southern California) that went the distance with the Brahmas finishing on top 3-2. Fresno City College was the team we played in the finals. Fresno City was good, they had three top D1-caliber players on that floor and beat us. We could not get aces like we normally do, and when we got the setter off the net, their system was good and their hitters found the floor. A 6-2 offense with two D1 opposites and the best OH in the state in #4 that we simply could not block nor dig. They won the serving and passing battle which is something we did well all year and beat our opponents with.
After losing three players to season-ending injuries (Kristen, Shari, and lastly our leading blocker Shanon), we had to overcome adversity. Most teams will crumble when faced with such hurdles. Our team did the opposite.....we became more resilient, played with high intensity and passion, and fought like champions. Not too many people can say they got to the final dance and won 30 matches. Our Sophomores are leaving the program having won 60 matches and losing only 6, winners of two conferences, and a trip to the State Finals two years in a row. It is all about the journey and we can most definitely and enthusiastically say that this has been a great and wonderful journey.
Yesterday was nothing more than one volleyball match....It doesn't define one's season or one's character. We lost fair and square. Seeing 'true Brahmas' talk the talk and living it is what is important. It hurts to lose two finals in a row, but the bigger picture is a lot more important than that. Our team was indeed a very special group. Not only are they talented, but they are good people with high moral ethics and a worth ethic that is second to none. We are honored to have them as Brahmas.
This morning, there was an article about our match last night in the Daily News, click on this link: Daily News Article - Pierce Volleyball
Hayley Alvarez, when interviewed by the reporter, expressed her pride in the team's ability to uphold “the standards of the program.” It’s such an honor to see players refer to our program that way. This means that the players have truly come to realize that they are part of something bigger than themselves here in the program. Something that they will be proud of throughout their lives. That is a great victory.
The #2 seed Pierce Brahmas hosted the #7 seeded Golden West in a 2nd round regional match up with a trip to the State Championship Tournament on the line. The Rustlers came into the Brahma-dome and played very well. They played a very clean match missing only two serves on the night. Their defense was also a strength as they made the Brahmas earn every point. However, the Brahmas were up to the challenge and swept their way into the State tournament by winning 25-23, 25-15, 25-22.
Whitley Doss and Cassidy Rosso anchored the attack all night as they notched 12 and 14 kills respectively. The Brahmas also got a boost off the bench from Tamia Files who came in crunch time of the first set and delivered several big kills. Cairo Harrell contributed 5 block assists as the Brahmas notched 7 stuff blocks on the night.
Critical to the victory, as always, was the serving and passing battle. The Brahmas were helped by three aces from both Peyton Moyles and Hayley Alvarez. Hayley also was crucial in passing as she led the team passing a 2.31 on the match. Her passing group of Chela Maldonado, Kamala Lovick, and Julia Izquierdo also passed very well as the team ended the night passing a 2.19.
Now the Brahmas are set to host and participate in the State Tournament next weekend. We will open up against north #3 seeded Sierra College on Saturday December 3rd at 1pm. We look forward to seeing you there!
Round #1 Recap
The #2 seeded Brahmas took on the #16 seed Mounties of Mount San Antonio College on Tuesday night. The Mounties fresh off a victory in the play in round came in with lots of energy and executed well. They served tough all night and put pressure on the Brahmas offense. However, in the end the Brahmas prevailed in 4 sets (25-23, 25-18, 15-25, 25-20) to move on to the second round of the playoffs for a birth in the State Finals.
The Brahmas were steadied by the trio of left side attackers, Cassidy Rosso, Whitley Doss, and Anika Lewis who amassed 16, 10, and 8 kills respectively. They were too much firepower in the end, but couldn't have done their damage without Peyton Moyles getting the ball to them where they could finish it off she ended with 30 assists. Also, critical in the Brahmas attack was Hayley Alvarez stepping in as a second setter when needed. She ended the match in double digit assists with 10.

The Brahmas will host, #7 seed,Golden West on Saturday in the second round. They finished second in the vaunted Orange Empire conference and had a three set sweep over San Diego Mesa in the first round. Looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Last Friday vs. Victor Valley
The Brahmas hosted the Rams of Victor Valley College, and for the 20th time this season, the Brahmas swept their opponent. The scores were: 25-7, 25-10, 25-18. The Brahmas’ offense continues to be the sole statistical category that has been off the chart lately. It was a collective effort at the net with Rosso, Files, Doss, Alvarez, Weaver, and Harrell all contributing with freshman middle blocker, Cairo Harrell, scoring 8 kills. On the night, the Brahmas outhit the Rams 33 to 7 kills only. The Brahmas also had a season high 19 aces behind the spike/jump serves of sophomore, Hayley Alvarez, and sophomore outside hitter, Cassidy Rosso, leading the charge.
Although, the Brahmas will complete the regular season schedule when they travel to Glendale tomorrow night (while my wife most likely to go into labor for the birth of our first child.....Good luck to me.....) But with the win last Friday, the Brahmas clinched their 14th Western State Conference Championship in the last 16 years and improved to 161W-17L in the WSC in the last 16 years.
Regional Playoffs Round 1 and Round 2

Both matches will start at 6pm and we are expected to host both matches as we are anticipating to hold our #2 seed in the state.
A message to the Prospects/Recruits
In this e-mail I am including all the High School and Club players/prospects I have made contact with via e-mail (in form of an official recruiting letter OR via phone OR via face to face contact at tournaments and games). The majority of you have been good about communicating via e-mail, text, or even better a phone call. However, a handful of you have either been inconsistent in communicating or simply do not communicate. If you are interested in playing for me and Pierce, you must learn to communicate……and that d than does not include Instagram, Twitter, Vine, Facebook, Facegram, Facepage, Bookface, Photogram, Instaphoto, or Snapchat. Having said that, and especially for those who have not made it to a game yet, let me know if you will be there, and if you are, make sure you come to the bench before the game and say hello.
Hope all is well with everyone. The last regular season home match is Friday, November 11 against Victor Valley College at 6pm (admission is free).

For those prospects who have not had a chance to come to a game yet, and now that the high school season is over for most, Friday night would be a good night to have you come visit and your parents are welcome as well. Let me know.
